Akon's Smack That is one of the most popular songs of recent times. Brought up in Senegal, Akon moved to New Jersey when he was seven and has had a troubled existence in the United States, having been jailed a number of times for armed robbery, grand theft auto and possible drug charges.
Akon started producing music upon release from prison. His tapes were sent to SRC/Universal, which released Trouble, Akon's debut LP, in June 2004. The album has been called "a mesmerising hybrid of Akon's raps and West African-styled vocals with East Coast- and Southern-styled beats".
Akon has gone from stength to stength and Smack That was nominated for "Best Rap/Sung Collaboration" at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. The superstar is planning a full-length movie about his life. The title has been confirmed as Money, Power,& Respect: A Hustler's Dream, and the release is planned for the end of 2007 or at some point in 2008.
